North Korea Unveils 8,700-Ton Nuclear Submarine Amid Tensions
URGENT UPDATE: North Korea has just announced a significant advancement in its military capabilities, showcasing an 8,700-ton nuclear-powered strategic guided missile submarine. The latest report from Rodong Sinmun, dated December 25, describes this development as a “revolutionary change” in the nation’s deterrence strategy, signaling an escalation in regional tensions.
During a site visit, Kim Jong-un emphasized that North Korea has successfully constructed a “nuclear shield” to bolster national security. Photographs reveal the submarine’s exterior nearing completion, and analysts speculate it may already feature a small reactor essential for nuclear operations. The submarine appears to include launch tubes for submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), similar to the existing 3,000-ton Kim Gun Ok submarine.
This announcement comes as North Korea intensifies its focus on naval nuclear armament, a priority established during the ruling party’s 2021 congress. Kim warned that any adversary threatening North Korea’s “strategic sovereignty” will “pay the price.” This statement underscores the growing tensions in the region, particularly in light of South Korea’s ongoing discussions about its own nuclear-powered submarines.
Analysts are questioning North Korea’s capability to operate such a large nuclear submarine, particularly regarding its mastery of small reactor technology and large submarine construction. Some experts suggest that advancements may be linked to closer ties with Russia, particularly since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war. Speculation arises that North Korea could have received technological support from Russia, raising concerns about the implications for regional security.
The timing of this public rollout appears strategically aimed at South Korea, reflecting a show of force amidst rising debates in Seoul over enhancing its own naval capabilities. Cho Han-beom, a senior research fellow at the Korea Institute for National Unification, remarked that the visible SLBM tubes on the submarine indicate limitations in North Korean technology, suggesting that the disclosure may have been a hasty response to South Korea’s discussions.
In a related development, Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory message to Kim on December 18, praising North Korean troops for their “heroic participation” and emphasizing the strengthening ties between the two nations across various sectors, including politics and trade. This growing collaboration adds another layer of complexity to the geopolitical landscape in East Asia.
As the situation unfolds, the international community remains on high alert, closely monitoring North Korea’s military advancements and their potential impact on regional stability. What happens next could redefine security dynamics in the area. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
