Hanwha’s Philly Shipyard Declares Readiness for U.S. Nuclear Submarine Construction

Hanwha Group has announced that its Philly Shipyard is equipped to construct nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy. This statement, made by Alex Wong, the global chief strategy officer of Hanwha, emphasizes the company’s readiness to support the U.S. government’s commitment to enhancing its nuclear submarine capabilities.

During a media event held at the shipyard in Philadelphia on December 25, 2023, Wong highlighted the strong focus of the U.S. and its allies on nuclear-powered submarine technology. “We stand ready to fulfil the ability to build those submarines here in Philly when the governments are ready,” Wong stated, showcasing the strategic positioning of Hanwha within the evolving defense landscape.

Investment and Expansion Plans

South Korean shipbuilders, including Hanwha, are taking significant steps to capitalize on the U.S. government’s initiatives to revive its shipbuilding industry. The company has pledged to invest $150 billion in the U.S. shipbuilding sector as part of a recently signed trade deal, which aims to reduce tariffs on Korean automobile imports from 25% to 15%.

During a press conference, former President Donald Trump endorsed Hanwha, referring to the company as “a good company.” He also mentioned that Hanwha would be involved in constructing frigates for the U.S. Navy. The company’s decision to invest $5 billion in the Philly Shipyard, which it acquired in 2024 for $100 million, reflects its ambition to expand its footprint in the U.S. defense sector.

Executives from Hanwha noted that they are actively recruiting talent with experience in building Virginia-class submarines. This move aligns with the increasing interest from Washington in broadening the U.S. submarine industrial base.
