Chaos Erupts in Wyomissing with Crashes, Chases, and Arrests
A series of incidents unfolded on Sunday, December 21, 2023, in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, involving police crashes, traffic violations, and multiple assists to neighboring departments. One significant event occurred just before 01:00 a.m. on Chestnut Street, where a marked Wyomissing police vehicle was struck by another vehicle that allegedly ran a red light. Both vehicles were towed from the scene, and the police vehicle was taken to the borough garage. The officer involved was subsequently transported to Reading Hospital Medical Center for evaluation. West Reading Police have taken responsibility for the accident investigation.
Earlier that morning, officers responded to a weapons-related incident on Third Avenue. A man reportedly brandished a knife at security personnel, though details regarding any charges or injuries were not disclosed.
In a separate incident, Wyomissing police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Route 422 near North Wyomissing Boulevard shortly after midnight. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, but officers chose not to pursue due to safety concerns associated with reckless driving. Throughout the day, police handled numerous traffic stops, resulting in warnings and citations for various violations, including expired registration, lack of insurance, and driving without a license.
Multiple Calls and Domestic Incidents
Police also investigated several burglar alarms across the borough, all of which were determined to be false or canceled prior to arrival. Other calls included reports of suspicious vehicles, 911 hang-up calls, and a hit-and-run involving a parked police vehicle in Reading. Additionally, an alleged theft of services occurred on Woodland Road, where a man reportedly left a restaurant without paying after his payment card was declined.
As evening approached, Wyomissing police assisted officers from Shillington and West Reading with domestic-related incidents. In one case in Shillington, a male was taken into custody following a reported physical dispute. In West Reading, officers responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment building, where the involved male left voluntarily for the night.
Another incident involved a juvenile on Crossing Drive, where a young female was allegedly seen attempting to remove signs from a fallen street sign post. The juvenile was released to a parent at the scene.
Authorities have emphasized that all matters described remain allegations, with any suspect, arrestee, or defendant presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The incident log from the Wyomissing Police Department recorded a total of 26 calls for service throughout the day, underscoring a demanding shift for officers across the borough.
