Minnesota Man Overcomes Homelessness, Finds New Home in Grand Forks
A Minnesota man has successfully transitioned from homelessness to stable housing in Grand Forks, marking a significant milestone in his recovery journey. Troy Miller, originally from Sandstone, Minnesota, moved to Grand Forks earlier this year after completing six months of inpatient treatment in St. Cloud. He recently secured an apartment, moving out of the Northlands Rescue Mission, the city’s primary emergency shelter.
Miller expressed his relief and excitement about his new living situation. “It’s really nice around here,” he noted, adding that he looks forward to having his family visit. His journey has not been easy, as he faced challenges in establishing himself in a new city without a support network. “I don’t know anybody here, and it was really hard to get started,” Miller shared.
After separating from his longtime girlfriend and losing his previous housing, Miller recognized the need for change. He has battled with personal issues, including drug addiction, which he said is prevalent in his family. “I always want to help people. I never want to help myself,” he admitted, highlighting the internal conflict that delayed his own recovery.
His daughters have been a significant source of motivation for him to focus on his well-being. “They help a lot. They’re all very proud of me,” he stated. Miller speaks with them daily, and they have encouraged him to prioritize his progress. The prospect of having them visit his new apartment has further fueled his determination.
In addition to the support from his family, Miller has found friendship in Grand Forks. A new acquaintance, for whom he did some work, assisted him in finding his apartment. Miller officially moved into his new home on March 15, 2025.
While he faces ongoing challenges, such as obtaining new glasses and completing his medication-assisted treatment, he remains optimistic about the future. “This is the first time I’ve been four months sober,” he noted proudly. “I love being sober.”
Miller’s story is not unique. According to a recent social media update from Northlands Rescue Mission, approximately 260 individuals have been assisted in finding homes throughout 2025. This highlights the ongoing efforts of the organization to combat homelessness and support those in need.
Miller’s experience reflects the resilience of individuals striving to rebuild their lives. With renewed hope and support, he is looking forward to a fresh start in Grand Forks.
