UPDATE: The New York Mets have officially signed Jorge Polanco to a $40 million, two-year contract, with the versatile infielder set to assume a primary role at first base. During a Zoom news conference on Monday, Polanco confirmed he is ready for the challenge, stating, “They told me that I’d be playing a good amount of first base, but that I could also be bouncing around.”

This announcement comes after fan-favorite Pete Alonso departed the Mets, signing a lucrative $155 million, five-year deal with Baltimore. The Mets are counting on Polanco to fill this significant void as they aim to strengthen their roster for the upcoming 2025 season.

Polanco, who has played primarily as a shortstop and second baseman throughout his career, brings a wealth of experience to the Mets. Although his first base experience is limited to just one pitch, he expressed his willingness to adapt, saying, “I was offering my services to teams as a first baseman, second baseman, third baseman.” His readiness to take on multiple positions is a strategic advantage for the Mets.

Last season with the Seattle Mariners, Polanco showcased his offensive prowess, hitting .265 with 26 home runs, 78 RBIs, and an impressive .821 OPS over 138 games. His transition to first base was facilitated by Mariners’ coaching staff, who encouraged him to prepare for the position. “It was very easy because I had already spoken to my agent about starting to work out at first and trying to become a more versatile baseball player,” Polanco explained.

Polanco’s only action at first base came last April when a ball hit by Wilmer Flores resulted in a walk-off win for San Francisco against the Mariners. “It’s just like they always say, whenever you come into the game, the ball always finds you,” he recalled. Despite this brief experience, Polanco is optimistic about his ability to adapt, noting that his background in multiple infield positions will aid his transition.

With the Mets facing the challenge of replacing Alonso, who significantly contributed to their lineup, Polanco’s versatility could prove invaluable. His ability to play various positions not only enhances his value but also provides the Mets with tactical flexibility on the field.

The Mets are gearing up for a competitive season, and Polanco’s adaptability could be a game-changer. Fans are eager to see how he will step into this pivotal role, especially with the team aiming to bounce back after Alonso’s departure.

As the 2025 MLB season approaches, all eyes will be on Polanco as he prepares to make his mark at first base, bringing excitement and anticipation to Mets fans everywhere.
