The United States has significantly intensified its military operations against the Islamic State (IS) in Syria following the deaths of two US soldiers and an interpreter in an attack attributed to the terrorist group. On December 17, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that its forces, alongside partners, have conducted nearly 80 operations since July to eliminate IS operatives that pose a direct threat to both the United States and its interests abroad.

The statement from CENTCOM was released in response to the December 13 attack in which the soldiers were killed by a member of the Syrian security forces. Both US and Syrian authorities have implicated the Islamic State in the incident. In the wake of the attack, operations against IS and other armed groups in both Syria and Iraq have escalated. Notably, CENTCOM indicated that the Islamic State has inspired at least 11 plots or attacks against targets within the United States over the past year.

Over the last six months, US operations have led to the detention of 119 terrorists and the elimination of 14 terrorists. The US has collaborated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), focusing on eastern Syria, to combat the remnants of the Islamic State. Admiral Brad Cooper, head of CENTCOM, reaffirmed the commitment to pursue those who threaten American lives and interests, stating, “We are steadfast in our relentless pursuit of terrorists who seek to harm Americans and our interests abroad.”

Recent Operations and Collaborations

The December 17 statement highlighted a new partnership with the Syrian government. US personnel have worked with the Syrian Ministry of Interior to conduct raids on Islamic State sites. These operations have resulted in the destruction of over 130 mortars and rockets, as well as multiple rifles and anti-tank mines. “We will continue to work closely with our Syrian partners to hunt down ISIS networks and prevent their resurgence,” Cooper added.

On the same day, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Syrian Internal Security Forces arrested an individual linked to IS during a targeted operation in the Dummar neighborhood of Damascus. Brigadier General Osama Mohammad Khair Atkeh stated that the operation was based on “reliable intelligence information and accurate field data,” leading to the discovery of explosive devices, weapons, and drones.

Despite significant losses, the Islamic State continues to represent a threat in both Syria and Iraq. Iraq’s Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) announced on December 17 the arrest of six suspected IS members and the destruction of numerous militant hideouts. These coordinated security operations were conducted across various Iraqi regions, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Baghdad.

Cross-Border Operations and Increased Activity

Iraqi security forces have also demonstrated increased activity, including a rare airborne raid into Syria in collaboration with Syrian security forces. This raid, reported on December 18, targeted IS hideouts near the Iraqi border in Hasaka province. Specific details regarding the nationality of the detainees or charges against them have not been disclosed.

In a separate operation on December 18, a US raid near Raqqa targeted an Islamic State operative. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that members of an IS cell engaged in heavy gunfire with International Coalition Forces during the raid. The SOHR described this operation as the second of its kind in under 24 hours, suggesting a heightened tempo of actions coinciding with the Iraqi operations.

The coordinated efforts between the US, Iraqi, and Syrian forces underscore the ongoing challenges posed by the Islamic State, even as its territorial control has diminished in the region. The situation remains fluid, with both local and international forces committed to eradicating the remnants of the group and ensuring regional stability.
