UK Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Resigns Amid Mandelson Controversy
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing significant political turmoil following the resignation of his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the U.K. ambassador to the United States. The resignation, which occurred on Sunday, is linked to Mandelson’s connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein and the fallout from newly disclosed documents regarding his past.
McSweeney accepted full responsibility for advising Starmer to appoint Mandelson, 72, to this critical diplomatic role. In a statement, he expressed regret: “The decision to appoint Peter Mandelson was wrong. He has damaged our party, our country, and trust in politics itself.” His resignation comes amid growing scrutiny of Starmer’s judgment, exacerbated by a release of documents from the U.S. concerning Epstein, which include allegations that Mandelson shared sensitive market information during his tenure as the U.K. government’s business secretary during the 2008 financial crisis.
In response to the mounting pressure, Starmer’s administration has committed to releasing relevant emails and documentation related to Mandelson’s appointment. These documents are expected to clarify whether Mandelson misled officials during his vetting process. Starmer himself has publicly apologized, stating that he was unaware of the extent of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein at the time of the appointment. He remarked, “None of us knew the depth of the darkness of the relationship between Mandelson and Epstein.”
Political opposition has intensified, with Kemi Badenoch, leader of the Conservative Party, calling for Starmer’s resignation: “Keir Starmer has to take responsibility for his own terrible decisions.” This criticism highlights the growing discontent among lawmakers regarding the Prime Minister’s leadership and judgment.
Mandelson, a veteran politician and former Cabinet minister, has not faced any criminal charges. Nevertheless, the Metropolitan Police conducted a search of his London residence as part of an ongoing investigation into potential misconduct in public office. It is important to note that Mandelson is not being accused of any sexual offenses related to Epstein. The police stated that the investigation is complex and will require “a significant amount of further evidence gathering and analysis.”
Starmer previously dismissed Mandelson from his ambassadorial position in September 2023 due to earlier revelations about the latter’s connections to Epstein. Critics argue that the new documents released by the U.S. Department of Justice have raised serious questions about Starmer’s decision-making process. Among the troubling revelations are records indicating that Mandelson received payments totaling $75,000 from Epstein’s associates between 2003 and 2004.
Mandelson’s history in politics includes two prior resignations from high-ranking government positions due to ethical scandals. As Starmer navigates this crisis, the implications for his leadership and the Labour Party could be profound, raising concerns about governance and trust among the electorate.
