The state of Minas Gerais has been particularly hard-hit, with the municipality of Juiz de Fora reporting 16 deaths and 43 people unaccounted for. The nearby city of Uba has confirmed seven fatalities and four missing individuals. Lieutenant Henrique Barcellos, a spokesperson for the Minas Gerais fire department, indicated that firefighters have been deployed to address “flooding incidents, landslides, and structural risks” along the overflowing Paraibuna River. The mayor of Juiz de Fora, Margarida Salomao, has declared a state of emergency, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the rainfall, which has totaled 584 millimeters (approximately 1.9 feet) this month, making it the wettest February on record for the city.

In response to the crisis, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva acknowledged the state of emergency and activated national civil defense resources. Via social media platform X, he stated, “Our focus is to guarantee humanitarian assistance, the restoration of basic services, aid to displaced people, and support for reconstruction.”

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with sniffer dogs deployed to comb through debris and mud in search of victims. Local residents have joined these efforts, driven by personal loss. One father, Valtencir Coutinho, expressed his anguish while seeking his six-year-old daughter, Sophia, beneath the rubble, stating, “We are fighting for that.”

The situation in Juiz de Fora remains dire, with reports of at least 20 landslides isolating neighborhoods. An estimated 440 people have been displaced from their homes and are currently receiving temporary shelter assistance. Local business owner Angelica Rezende Moreira lamented the loss of everything in her restaurant, calling for aid from both state and federal authorities.

As classes have been suspended in all municipal schools, the community faces significant challenges moving forward.
