SkyWest Airlines to Launch New Maintenance Base in Kansas by 2026
SkyWest Airlines has confirmed plans to establish a new maintenance facility at Salina Regional Airport in Kansas. The facility is expected to commence operations in early spring of 2026, marking the company’s 14th maintenance base. This new addition aims to enhance SkyWest’s already extensive customer service operations at the airport.
As the world’s largest regional airline, SkyWest Airlines operates a fleet of over 500 aircraft. It ranks just behind major carriers such as Ryanair and Delta in terms of size. The airline primarily utilizes the Bombardier CRJ series and the Embraer E175 aircraft for its regional services, partnering with major airlines including Alaska Horizon, Delta Connection, American Eagle, and United Express.
Details of the New Maintenance Base
The maintenance base at Salina Regional Airport will complement SkyWest’s existing network, which includes 13 line stations across various locations. Line stations perform essential light maintenance checks to ensure aircraft readiness for immediate service. In contrast, the new facility will be equipped to conduct more comprehensive inspections and repairs, including regular checks such as “C” and “D” checks, as well as structural repairs and overhauls.
This facility is particularly significant for SkyWest, given that it will serve as a dedicated site for servicing the Bombardier CRJ aircraft, which currently operate flights to and from Salina Regional Airport. Presently, the airport primarily accommodates flights from United Express, connecting passengers to hubs in Chicago, Denver, and Houston.
Local and state government agencies, including the Kansas Department of Commerce, the City of Salina, Salina County, and the Salina Community Economic Development Organization, have expressed strong support for the new facility. SkyWest anticipates that the establishment of this maintenance base will create several high-paying jobs in the area, enhancing the local economy.
SkyWest’s Operations and Contributions
SkyWest Airlines is not only the largest regional airline in the United States but also a pivotal player in the country’s aviation landscape. Its operations are integral to the Essential Air Service (EAS) program, which provides subsidies to maintain air service in smaller cities. By offering EAS services for Delta Connection and United Express, SkyWest facilitates essential connectivity for communities across the nation.
Currently, SkyWest maintains 13 operational bases, with a focus on the western United States. Most of its maintenance bases are situated in smaller airports, which allows for efficient servicing of aircraft without the need to pull them from active service for extended periods.
As the airline industry continues to evolve, the opening of the new maintenance base at Salina Regional Airport will not only expand SkyWest’s operational capabilities but also contribute positively to the community by generating employment opportunities and enhancing air service reliability.
