Russia Launches Massive Missile Attack on Ukraine, Casualties Reported
Russia has launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine, resulting in at least four fatalities and numerous injuries. The assault, which occurred overnight, involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. Among the weapons used was the new Oreshnik missile, a ballistic missile that Russia claims can fly at ten times the speed of sound and evade missile defense systems.
This attack marks the second known deployment of the Oreshnik missile, highlighting its significance in Russia’s military strategy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that four individuals were killed, including an emergency medical aid worker, while at least 22 others sustained injuries in the capital, Kyiv. The barrage struck residential apartment buildings, causing significant damage and disruption to essential services such as electricity and water.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, detailed the extent of the assault, indicating that multiple districts, including Desnyanskyi, were targeted. In one instance, a drone crashed onto the roof of a multi-story building. The attack took place shortly after President Zelenskyy had warned the nation of possible large-scale offensives from Russia, particularly taking advantage of the harsh winter conditions that have created icy roads.
Retaliation Claims and International Response
The Russian Defense Ministry has asserted that the missile strikes were a response to a purported Ukrainian drone attack on President Vladimir Putin‘s residence last month. This claim has been rejected by both Ukrainian officials and U.S. authorities, including President Donald Trump. In a statement, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukraine would seek immediate international action, calling for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and discussions within the Ukraine-NATO Council.
“The strike near the EU and NATO border poses a serious threat to security on the European continent,” Sybiha emphasized in a post on social media platform X. He urged for robust responses to Russia’s actions, which he described as reckless.
Reports suggest that the Oreshnik missile, which Russia first employed against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro in November 2024, carries six warheads with submunitions. Russian media indicated that the missile targeted a significant underground natural gas storage facility in Ukraine’s western Lviv region, crucial for foreign military aid logistics.
Impact on Civilians and Infrastructure
The impact of the attack on civilians has been profound. Dmytro Karpenko, a resident of Kyiv, described the chaos as windows shattered and flames erupted in nearby buildings. He remarked on the continuous suffering of the Ukrainian people and their desire for peace amidst ongoing violence.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the attack resulted in widespread disruptions to utilities and reported damage to the Qatari Embassy, which has played a mediating role in prisoner exchanges. Rescue operations are ongoing, with five workers injured while responding to the crisis.
As the situation evolves, the international community remains alert to the implications of these attacks. Zelenskyy continues to push for a unified front among allies to deter further Russian aggressions, stressing the urgency for decisive action in response to the hostile developments.
