Record 1,335-Year Sentence for MS-13 Gang Member in El Salvador
A member of the notorious MS-13 gang, often referred to as “the worst gang in the world,” has been sentenced to an extraordinary 1,335 years in prison. Marvin Abel Hernandez Palacios received this lengthy sentence following his conviction for multiple serious offenses, including murder, trafficking, extortion, and kidnapping. The sentencing took place on December 18, 2023, as part of El Salvador’s intensified efforts to combat gang violence.
The sentencing reflects a broader crackdown on gang activity within the country. On the same day, authorities handed down sentences to 248 MS-13 gang members, with prison terms ranging from 463 to 958 years for various crimes. The Attorney General’s Office of El Salvador announced that these individuals were found guilty of numerous serious offenses, including 43 counts of aggravated homicide and 42 counts of enforced disappearance.
El Salvador has seen a significant rise in efforts to dismantle MS-13, which, along with its rival Barrio 18, previously controlled around 80% of the nation. This crackdown has been crucial in addressing a persistent issue; the country has one of the highest murder rates globally, with both gangs linked to approximately 200,000 deaths over the past three decades.
According to prosecutors, the criminal activities of these gang members have deeply affected the local community. A total of 169 victims were identified as being impacted by their actions. Among the serious crimes cited were the disappearance and murder of siblings Karen and Eduardo Guerrero Toledo in December 2021, and the femicide of soccer player Claudia Jimena Granados in October 2021. Additionally, the murder of a university student in March 2019 and another student’s disappearance and murder in April 2020 were noted as part of the gang’s violent history.
The Attorney General’s Office revealed that MS-13 has engaged in extensive extortion practices, targeting business owners and demanding various amounts of money to prevent harm. Many victims have been forced to close their businesses out of fear of retaliation from gang members. “Some people had to close their businesses out of fear of the threats,” the office remarked in a statement.
This sentencing marks a significant step in El Salvador’s ongoing battle against organized crime. The government’s actions follow a broader strategy initiated in 2022 to restore safety and order in a country long plagued by gang violence.
In a previous statement, former US President Donald Trump labeled MS-13 as a terrorist organization, describing it as “probably the meanest, worst gang in the world” and highlighting the severe impact of their actions on communities. As El Salvador continues its crackdown, the implications for both local and regional security remain significant, as authorities strive to reclaim control from gangs that have long instilled fear in the population.
