Photographer Confronts Vision Loss in Documentary Premiere at Berlin
A new documentary titled The Hidden Face of the Earth explores the profound journey of a photographer grappling with vision loss. Directed by Arnaud Alain, this feature marks his directorial debut and will premiere on February 17, 2024, in the Panorama Dokumente section of the Berlin International Film Festival.
The film follows Dimitri, a passionate photographer who is slowly losing his eyesight. According to a synopsis, “Dimitri loves to photograph the people around him. But for years, images have been slipping away from his sight.” This poignant narrative delves into how he copes with his deteriorating vision while still pursuing his passion for capturing moments on camera.
A Unique Perspective on Photography
Produced by Mathilde Raczymow and shot by Alain himself, The Hidden Face of the Earth invites viewers to join Dimitri as he navigates the streets of Paris, New York, and beyond. The documentary captures his interactions with friends, lovers, and strangers, allowing audiences to witness the world through his unique perspective.
“As he explains in the film, hidden behind his camera, he feels at peace,” Alain states. “His role as a photographer distances him from his visual impairment.”
Dimitri’s relationship with photography is further emphasized by Alain, who notes that the camera becomes an extension of his gaze. Throughout the film, Dimitri engages with diverse subjects, including Black Lives Matter activists and passing lovers. Alain highlights that these encounters shape bonds of friendship, desire, and sometimes anger.
Exploring the Unseen
The title of the film, The Hidden Face of the Earth, encapsulates its deeper themes. Alain elaborates, “Throughout the film, our images echo each other. Our imaginations intersect, our sensibilities meet and sometimes collide. Dimitri invites us to look at what we don’t see, towards the hidden face of the Earth.”
Viewers can look forward to an exclusive clip from the documentary, featuring Alain as he takes photographs from a cliff, further showcasing the film’s emotional depth and visual storytelling. With its world premiere approaching, The Hidden Face of the Earth promises to be a compelling exploration of art, perception, and the human experience.
Outplay Films is managing the world sales for this evocative documentary, produced by Les Films du Bilboquet. As audiences prepare for its premiere, the film is anticipated to resonate with viewers on multiple levels, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs of living with a visual impairment.
