Two minor league pitchers, Luis Custodio and Luis Sierra, have been suspended for 56 games each following positive drug tests. The announcement was made on Monday by the commissioner’s office, which oversees the minor league drug program applicable to players outside the United States and Canada.

Details of the Suspensions

Both pitchers tested positive for Stanozolol, a substance classified as a performance-enhancing drug. Custodio, a 21-year-old left-hander, had a record of 2-1 with a 7.94 ERA in 12 relief appearances last season with the Giants Black of the Dominican Summer League. He signed with the San Francisco Giants in 2023 after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Sierra, 20 years old and a right-hander, was signed by the Baltimore Orioles for a $10,000 bonus last June. He posted an 0-2 record with a 9.95 ERA in 11 relief appearances for the DSL Orioles before being released on January 5, 2025. His suspension will take effect when he signs with a major league organization.

Broader Context of Drug Suspensions

This incident adds to the growing list of players facing penalties under the league’s drug policies. In total, three players have been suspended this year for positive tests. Notably, free agent outfielder Max Kepler received an 80-game suspension last Friday under the major league program after testing positive for Epitrenbolone.

The enforcement of these suspensions reflects the league’s ongoing commitment to maintaining a fair and competitive environment for all players. As the minor league season progresses, the implications of these suspensions will be closely monitored by teams and fans alike.
