Israeli Military Confirms Death Toll in Gaza Reaches 70,000
The Israeli military has officially acknowledged that approximately 70,000 Palestinians have been killed during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. This figure aligns closely with reports from the Palestinian Ministry of Health, which has been publishing casualty figures throughout the war. Local media outlets, including the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, reported this acknowledgment during a briefing with Israeli journalists.
During a session with reporters, military officials stated, “We estimate that about 70,000 Gazans were killed in the war, not including the missing.” The information was also confirmed by Kan 11, Israel’s public broadcaster, which cited the Coordinator of Government Affairs in the Territories (COGAT). Efforts are now underway to analyze how many of those killed were civilians versus militants.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that the total number of Palestinians killed since the conflict began has reached 71,667, with an additional 171,343 reported injured. This update includes 492 Palestinian fatalities since a ceasefire took effect in mid-October. Notably, the ministry does not differentiate between civilians and militants in its reports.
Initially, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expressed skepticism regarding the health ministry’s casualty figures, accusing it of inflating numbers due to alleged control by Hamas. An IDF spokesperson declined to confirm the figures shared with journalists, stating, “The IDF clarifies that the details published do not reflect official IDF data. Any publication or report on this matter will be released through official and orderly channels.” The spokesperson added that they had no further comments beyond what had been previously stated.
While the IDF has not publicly confirmed the death toll, senior officials have privately referenced the significant number of casualties. In an audio recording released by Channel 12 last August, former IDF intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Aharon Haliva mentioned, “The fact that there are already 50,000 dead in Gaza is necessary and required for future generations.” This statement was made prior to the casualty count surpassing 50,000 in March 2025.
In September, former IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi indicated the scale of casualties by stating, “There are 2.2 million people in Gaza. There are in Gaza today more than 10% who were killed or injured, more than 200,000. This is not a gentle war.” His comments closely matched the health ministry’s earlier figures, which reported that Israeli forces had killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians and injured more than 164,000.
The stark reality of these numbers highlights the human cost of the conflict in Gaza, raising critical questions about the impact on civilians and the broader implications for peace in the region. As the situation evolves, both local and international communities continue to watch closely, seeking clarity and accountability amidst the tragedy.
