Israel Receives Body of Lt. Hadar Goldin, Killed in 2014
Israel has received the body of Lieutenant Hadar Goldin, a soldier killed in an ambush by Hamas in 2014. His remains had been held in Gaza since his death during combat. The Israeli military confirmed that Lt. Goldin, who was 23 years old when he died, has been formally identified and will be buried, allowing his family to give him a Jewish burial.
The transfer of Lt. Goldin’s body was part of a ceasefire agreement, according to Hamas’s armed wing, which announced the handover on Sunday. This move comes after Hamas returned all 20 living hostages and 24 out of 28 deceased hostages as stipulated in the first phase of the deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Lt. Goldin’s family can now lay him to rest, emphasizing his commitment to retrieving all deceased hostages. “We have returned 250 so far. We will bring them all back,” he said.
Efforts to Recover Lt. Goldin’s Remains
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) expressed “deep condolences” to Goldin’s family and reaffirmed its commitment to recovering all deceased hostages. Efforts to retrieve Lt. Goldin’s body involved extensive intelligence operations and ground activities over the past decade, particularly during the two-year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas.
On August 1, 2014, Lt. Goldin was killed during a patrol near Rafah in southern Gaza, shortly after a ceasefire commenced in that year’s war. He was part of a unit that came under fire from Hamas fighters. The military determined that Lt. Goldin lost his life, along with two other soldiers, during a firefight, after which his body was taken into an underground tunnel by Hamas militants. In response, the Israeli military launched significant bombardments in Rafah, leading to numerous Palestinian civilian casualties over the following days.
On Saturday, two Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire in Gaza, with the IDF claiming they crossed a designated line and posed an “immediate threat.” In separate incidents, local medics reported one Palestinian killed and another wounded by Israeli fire in the Khan Younis area.
Since the ceasefire began, the Hamas-run health ministry indicated that at least 241 people have been killed by Israeli military operations. This follows a campaign initiated by Israel in response to the October 7, 2023, attack, during which Hamas militants killed approximately 1,200 individuals in southern Israel and took 251 hostages. According to the health ministry, Israeli attacks have resulted in over 69,176 fatalities in Gaza since that date.
The return of Lt. Goldin’s body marks a significant moment for his family and the nation, as they have long awaited closure following his death. His family expressed that “an entire nation is waiting for Hadar to be returned to us,” highlighting the broader emotional impact of this event.
