Indiana Delays SNAP Benefits as USDA Recalculates Assistance

The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) announced that partial Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November will be delayed by at least one week. This delay affects approximately 274,000 SNAP households in the state as the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recalculates the benefits. Typically, benefits are issued on the fifth of each month, but this timeline has shifted due to the recalculation process.

The delay is occurring in the context of the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history, which has created budgetary challenges. A recent court ruling mandated the Trump administration to distribute remaining SNAP funds during this shutdown. However, these funds are insufficient to cover the full November benefits. Unlike other welfare programs such as Social Security and Medicare, SNAP is not classified as “mandatory spending” and requires annual budget approval.

Changes to SNAP Benefits Calculation

According to the FSSA, each household’s SNAP benefit must be recalculated using a revised formula mandated by the USDA. The federal maximum allotment for a household has been reduced by 50%. SNAP benefits are designed under the assumption that households spend 30% of their net income on food. The benefits are calculated by subtracting this amount from the federally determined maximum allotment.

The FSSA expressed concern for those affected by this delay, stating, “We understand the urgency of this situation and are working swiftly to complete the recalculations and resume benefit issuance as soon as possible.”

In light of this situation, residents of Indiana who require immediate food assistance are encouraged to reach out for help. They can call 211 or contact their local food bank for support. The FSSA is also providing resources for individuals seeking to donate to food banks or those in need.

As the recalculation progresses, the FSSA aims to ensure that eligible households receive the necessary support as quickly as possible, even though the current circumstances present significant challenges.
