Gunmen Attack Village in Northern Nigeria, Leaving 30 Dead
At least 30 villagers were killed and several others abducted during a violent raid on Kasuwan-Daji village in Niger State, Nigeria. The attack occurred on the evening of October 14, 2023, when gunmen stormed the village, opening fire on residents and setting fire to the local market and several homes, according to police reports.
The Niger State police spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident but faced criticism from local residents, who reported a higher death toll of at least 37 individuals, with some estimates suggesting the number could rise as more victims remain unaccounted for. Many survivors expressed fear of returning to the village to recover bodies, citing a lack of security presence. “The bodies are there. If we don’t see any security, how can we go there?” one resident said, describing the attack as lasting up to three hours.
The attack in Kasuwan-Daji is part of a troubling trend of violence in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where armed gangs frequently target communities with minimal law enforcement. According to Rev. Fr. Stephen Kabirat, spokesman for the Catholic Church of Kontagora Diocese, over 40 people were killed, and among those kidnapped were children. Kabirat’s statements highlight the growing concern for safety in the region as similar incidents have occurred in the past.
Residents reported that the gunmen had been seen in nearby communities for about a week before the attack, raising alarms about their intentions. The assailants are believed to have originated from the National Park Forest near the Kabe district, which has become notorious as a hideout for armed groups.
This incident follows a distressing pattern of violence in Nigeria, where attacks by rogue gangs have increased significantly. In November 2022, over 300 schoolchildren and their teachers were kidnapped from a Catholic school near the same area, demonstrating the ongoing security challenges facing the region.
Local police claimed they deployed officers to search for those abducted, yet residents reported that security forces had yet to arrive at the site of the attack. This discrepancy has further fueled distrust among the villagers, who feel abandoned in the face of escalating violence.
The situation in northern Nigeria continues to deteriorate as communities grapple with the constant threat of violence and insecurity, raising urgent questions about the effectiveness of government efforts to restore peace in the region.
