Federal Agents Involved in Fatal Shooting of ICU Nurse in Minneapolis
Two federal agents discharged their weapons during the shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, in Minneapolis. This information was confirmed by a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) official who provided a notification to Congress. The incident occurred while officers attempted to take Pretti into custody, resulting in a struggle during which he allegedly resisted arrest.
According to an official statement, the situation escalated when one officer repeatedly shouted, “He’s got a gun!” Both a Border Patrol agent and a CBP officer fired their weapons. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) indicated that Pretti was fatally shot after approaching agents while armed with a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and two magazines. It remains unclear if he brandished the weapon during the encounter.
In a statement on social media, DHS explained that the officers attempted to disarm Pretti. They noted that he “violently resisted,” prompting an agent to fire “defensive shots” out of concern for the safety of both himself and his colleagues. Despite immediate medical aid, Pretti was pronounced dead at the scene.
Governor Criticizes DHS Communication
Governor Tim Walz expressed dissatisfaction with the DHS’s handling of the situation, particularly its decision to release information and a photo of the firearm on social media before a thorough investigation was conducted. He labeled the communication as “nonsense and lies,” arguing that it was irrelevant to the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Reports from CNN indicated that Pretti had a troubling history with federal agents. Prior to the shooting incident, he allegedly suffered a broken rib during an encounter with ICE agents. This incident occurred a week earlier, when Pretti intervened after witnessing agents pursuing a family on foot. According to an unnamed source, he began shouting and blowing a whistle, leading to a confrontation where “five agents tackled him” and one pressed down on his back, resulting in the injury. The agents subsequently released him without charges.
Context of Protests and Previous Incidents
The shooting of Pretti has amplified protests in the Twin Cities area, which have been ongoing since January 7, 2024. On that day, Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman, was fatally shot by an ICE officer, identified as Jonathan Ross. The incident unfolded after Good allegedly attempted to ram her SUV into Ross and other officers, resulting in injuries to Ross.
As investigations continue into both incidents, community leaders and advocates are calling for accountability and transparency from federal agencies. The events have raised significant concerns about the use of force by law enforcement and the treatment of individuals in custody.
The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected as authorities continue their inquiries.
