CIA Targets Iranians on Social Media Amid Military Threats

The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has launched a targeted social media campaign to recruit Iranians, providing Farsi-language instructions for those interested in contacting the agency securely. This recruitment effort coincides with a significant buildup of U.S. military forces in the Middle East, as President Donald Trump has indicated the possibility of military action against Iran if upcoming diplomatic talks do not yield satisfactory results regarding Tehran’s nuclear program.

On March 6, 2024, Trump addressed the nation during his State of the Union speech, asserting that he would not permit Iran, which he referred to as the “world’s biggest sponsor of terrorism,” to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has consistently denied any intention of pursuing a nuclear arsenal.

Social Media Outreach and Security Measures

The CIA posted its recruitment message on March 5, 2024, across various platforms including X, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the agency to enlist sources from Iran, China, North Korea, and Russia.

In its message, the CIA advised potential contacts to take precautions for their safety before reaching out. The agency recommended avoiding the use of work computers or personal phones and suggested that individuals use “a new, disposable device, if possible.” The guidelines emphasized the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and ensuring privacy during communication.

“Provide your location, name, job title, and access to information or skills of interest to our agency,” the message noted, urging users to utilize a trusted Virtual Private Network “not headquartered in Russia, Iran or China,” or the Tor Network for encrypted communication.

As of now, the CIA has not provided any official comments regarding this recruitment initiative, and Iran’s delegation to the United Nations has yet to respond to inquiries about the social media campaign.

Upcoming Diplomatic Negotiations

U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet with Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, in Geneva on March 7, 2024, for a new round of discussions focused on Iran’s nuclear program. Trump has threatened military action if the talks fail to reach a viable agreement or if Iran proceeds with executing individuals arrested during nationwide anti-government protests in January.

Human rights organizations report that thousands were killed during the government’s crackdown on these protests, marking the most severe domestic unrest in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
