Alaska Airlines brought the magic of the holiday season to life with its recent North Pole-themed “Fantasy Flight,” which welcomed 43 children from shelters and transitional housing in a festive journey. Departing from Spokane International Airport (GEG) in Washington State, the flight was part of an initiative aimed at spreading joy to underserved youth during the holidays.

The airline has organized these special flights for over 14 years, partnering with Northwest North Pole Adventures to create memorable experiences for children in need. This year, more than 200 volunteers contributed their time and effort to ensure the event was a success, embodying the spirit of giving that characterizes the holiday season.

Details of the Festive Journey

Flight AS1225, which cleverly references Christmas Day on December 25, took off for a 40-minute round trip. The children were dressed in festive red jumpers, adding to the excitement of their inaugural flight for many. Accompanied by chaperone “elves,” the youngsters participated in carols, games, and storytelling, enhancing the holiday atmosphere onboard.

Upon returning to Spokane, the Boeing 737 did not taxi to a typical gate. Instead, it arrived at a specially transformed hangar that resembled a winter wonderland. The setup included sparkling lights, decorations, and a variety of holiday activities. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus greeted each child personally, presenting them with gifts from their wish lists, an experience that many will remember for years to come.

A Long-Standing Holiday Tradition

Alaska Airlines and Northwest North Pole Adventures have collaborated since 2008 to bring this initiative to life. The program is a testament to the power of community, with local businesses donating decorations and toys to create a truly magical experience. The mission is to offer children facing challenges a moment of joy and wonder during the holiday season.

Steve Paul, Executive Director of Fantasy Flight, emphasized the importance of the event, stating that those involved “embody the magic and spirit of Christmas so strongly that glitter will appear dull compared to how they glow.” This heartfelt sentiment reflects the commitment of everyone involved to make the Fantasy Flight a cherished tradition.

As Alaska Airlines continues to operate these flights, the company remains dedicated to making a positive impact in the communities it serves, ensuring that the joy of the season reaches those who need it most.
