Woman Files $25 Million Lawsuit After Being Shot by Police
BREAKING: A woman has filed a $25 million lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department (DPD) after being shot six times by an officer during a traffic stop. The lawsuit, which addresses allegations of excessive force, is set to be addressed in a press conference today at 10 a.m.
Tracey Allen, the plaintiff, claims she was unarmed and terrified when the DPD officers approached her vehicle for a routine traffic violation. During the stop, she expressed her fear and requested a supervisor, but instead, she was pepper-sprayed and shot multiple times. The press conference will be streamed live, and details will follow.
In a shocking statement, Allen recounted, “
I was terrified. I believed I was going to be killed. I kept asking for help and was shot over and over again.
” Video footage from the incident shows her being cornered by police before shots were fired as she attempted to drive away.
The shooting incident occurred at the intersection of Concord and Outer Drive, raising serious concerns about DPD’s adherence to their own policies. Chief Todd Bettison confirmed that both the use of deadly force and the method of containment employed by officers violated department protocols.
The lawsuit seeks damages for Allen’s physical injuries, emotional trauma, and loss of income, highlighting a pattern of excessive and unconstitutional policing practices. “We do not shoot at moving vehicles unless it is an extreme circumstance where life is in jeopardy,” Chief Bettison stated in a previous address.
Initially, police reported that Allen had refused to provide her license and registration, which they claimed initiated the pursuit. However, after reviewing bodycam footage and further investigation, the narrative shifted, and Allen was reclassified from suspect to victim.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, with his status changing from paid suspension to without pay following a police commission meeting earlier this month. The DPD has declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.
This developing story underscores critical issues surrounding police conduct and the use of force, resonating deeply within the community. With the press conference just hours away, attention is on the details of the lawsuit and its implications for law enforcement accountability in Detroit.
