Urgent Update: Three Hikers Found Dead on Mt. Baldy
UPDATE: Three hikers have been found dead on Mt. Baldy as severe weather conditions continue to hinder rescue efforts, officials confirm. This tragic discovery comes after the men were reported missing earlier this week amidst harsh, windy conditions that have made recovery operations perilous.
On Monday, December 29, at approximately 11:30 a.m., rescuers from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department and the Fontana Sheriff’s Station launched a search for a 19-year-old hiker who had fallen approximately 500 feet near Devils Backbone. His friend sought help, while another companion managed to reach a location with cell service to provide rescuers with GPS coordinates.
During the aerial search, deputies located the injured hiker along with the two other hikers nearby. However, the powerful Santa Ana winds rendered it impossible for the rescue helicopter to land safely. By around 7:30 p.m. on Monday, an airship from Los Angeles County joined the search efforts, but strong winds again prevented a hoist operation. An air medic was eventually hoisted down to confirm the heartbreaking news that all three individuals had tragically perished.
As of now, the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department has not released information regarding the ages and identities of the other two hikers discovered near the fallen man. This incident raises urgent concerns about the safety of hikers in treacherous weather conditions, underscoring the risks associated with outdoor activities in extreme environments.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation, and further updates are expected as recovery efforts resume when conditions allow. The emotional toll of this tragedy is profound, reminding the community of the inherent dangers posed by nature and the importance of safety precautions for outdoor enthusiasts.
