UPDATE: Belal Aftab, mayor of Saratoga, has announced immediate plans to enhance street safety as traffic concerns escalate in the region. With the impending construction of a new Costco at Prospect and Lawrence in nearby San Jose, officials warn that traffic could surge nearly tenfold, significantly impacting local neighborhoods.

The changes come as residents prepare for increased traffic flow, particularly on weekends and evenings, as drivers seek the fastest routes to and from Highway 85. Aftab emphasizes that Saratoga’s wide residential roads, many lacking sidewalks, invite unsafe driving speeds. He stresses the need for community involvement to address these urgent issues.

In a call to action, Aftab urges residents to adopt three critical safety measures: wear reflective gear during darker hours, model safe driving behaviors like full stops at stop signs, and communicate with local officials about potential improvements. “Every extra minute spent idling is a minute lost with family and friends,” Aftab stated.

This initiative also responds to the increased danger posed by modern vehicles, especially electric cars, which are quieter and can surprise pedestrians, particularly at night. Aftab pointed out that while new housing developments typically have minimal traffic impact, the upcoming Costco will draw significant additional trips to the area.

Local authorities, including Councilmember Rosemary Kamei, who represents District 1 in San Jose, have expressed concerns over Costco’s lack of consideration for surrounding neighborhoods, despite attempts to engage in constructive dialogue. “We have reached out, but the response has been disappointing,” Aftab noted.

Saratoga is already seeing improvements, including the addition of buffered bike lanes, refreshed crosswalks, and solar beacons at key crossings, making the streets safer for all. Aftab insists that the community can contribute to making streets feel safer and more inviting.
