Urgent: Flights Canceled in Mexico as Cartel Violence Erupts
UPDATE: Multiple airlines have just canceled flights to and from key Mexican tourist destinations due to escalating cartel violence following the reported death of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho. This incident occurred after a military operation targeting El Mencho in Jalisco, Mexico, on February 22, 2026.
Travelers are facing chaos at airports, with major airlines like United Airlines and Southwest Airlines confirming all flights to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) and Guadalajara (GDL) have been canceled. “Nothing is more important to Southwest Airlines than the safety of our customers and our employees,” the airline stated, indicating it will continue to assess the situation as it develops.
Eyewitnesses report panic at Guadalajara International Airport, where travelers fled amid violent outbreaks. Smoke billowed from areas near the airport as officials warned of ongoing clashes across Jalisco and surrounding regions, further complicating the travel situation. “As a result of the violence, American Airlines has canceled flights to and from GDL, Mazatlán (MZT), and PVR for the remainder of today,” an airline spokesperson confirmed.
The turmoil follows reports of Mexican troops conducting operations in the area, targeting El Mencho, who was a high-profile figure with a $15 million bounty on his head. U.S. authorities have identified his cartel, the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, as a major fentanyl supplier to the United States.
In a notable statement, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau hailed the operation, saying, “This is a great development for Mexico, the US, Latin America, and the world. The good guys are stronger than the bad guys.”
As violence escalates, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has issued shelter-in-place advisories for several states, urging American citizens to remain vigilant. The situation remains fluid, with authorities closely monitoring the aftermath of El Mencho’s reported death.
Travelers are advised to stay updated on their flight status and consider alternative arrangements. Airlines have implemented travel waivers, allowing passengers to rebook flights without change fees due to this unprecedented disruption.
In this moment of crisis, passengers stranded in Jalisco face not only flight cancellations but also a lack of transportation options, compounding their distress. As tensions rise, the impact of El Mencho’s death extends beyond the immediate chaos, highlighting the ongoing struggle against cartel violence in Mexico.
