Urgent Alert: Mailbox Thief Targets Lower Greenville Residents
UPDATE: A wave of mail thefts has gripped the Lower Greenville community, raising alarms among residents who fear the thief possesses the master mail key to their complex. The community has been under siege as a suspect has been caught on camera stealing mail from multiple mailboxes this month.
Residents are rallying to identify the culprit after reports of ongoing thefts that include valuable items such as iPhones and credit cards. Surveillance footage shows the suspect easily accessing the mailboxes, a breach that can only occur with a master key. According to resident Taylor Shaw, this thief has targeted several areas, including Lindell, Hudson, Live Oak, and Bryan.
“So for a little over a month, we’ve had somebody with a master key that’s been opening up and stealing mail from not only our box, but also boxes all over the area,” Shaw told FOX 4’s Shaun Rabb. “He can just look through every single mail slot unencumbered, no issue, and rifle through all of our letters, small packages, whatever’s in there.”
Residents are demanding action. Shaw insists, “I want USPS to rekey all the boxes in this area. They need to do that and do it soon.”
In response to the growing concern, postal inspector Sean Smith explained the role of inspectors in investigating mail crimes. However, he emphasized that the responsibility for mailboxes and keys lies with the U.S. Postal Service. Smith urged residents to take precautionary measures, such as tracking their mail through the USPS website.
“It’s free, and you will get an email each morning with pictures of the mail set to be delivered to your box that day,” Smith advised. He also recommended that residents empty their mailboxes daily to minimize targets for thieves.
“If there’s no mail in there, there’s nothing for thieves to target,” Smith added. For those planning to vacation, he reminded residents that a mail hold is available free of charge through the USPS website to prevent valuable mail from sitting in mailboxes.
As this situation develops, Lower Greenville residents are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The community is coming together, united in their fight against this ongoing string of thefts. The urgency to address this issue has never been greater, as residents fear for their privacy and security.
Stay tuned for updates as authorities continue to investigate the mailbox thief targeting Lower Greenville.
