UPDATE: A 1.8 magnitude earthquake rocked Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, at 9 p.m. EST on October 25, 2023, sending tremors felt over 60 miles away. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the seismic event, which is one of two quakes recorded in Southern New England today.

Residents reported feeling the quake through the USGS’s “Did You Feel It?” tool, with at least eight individuals confirming they sensed the tremors. Notably, a user from Raynham, located more than 27 miles from the epicenter, described the experience, highlighting the quake’s unexpected reach.

Earlier in the day, a 1.9 magnitude earthquake struck Moodus, Connecticut, around 5:30 p.m., creating a day of seismic activity in the region. While a quake of 1.8 magnitude is typically not felt widely, the reports indicate that the vibrations had a significant impact on the community.

This seismic activity follows a recent 2.1 magnitude quake that disturbed residents in Milford, New Hampshire, just days prior, indicating a possible trend of increased seismic events in the area.

Residents in and around Mattapoisett are urged to stay alert as aftershocks could occur. The USGS encourages those who felt the quake to report their experiences online.

As seismic experts continue to monitor the situation, authorities emphasize the importance of preparedness in the event of stronger quakes in the future. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
