UPDATE: Trailheads near Estes Park have reopened as of Monday morning following an unsuccessful search for a third mountain lion that was suspected in a deadly attack last week. The Garden Gate, Gravel Pit, and Piper Meadows trailheads around Crosier Mountain, south of Glenhaven, are now accessible for hikers after being closed for several days.

Just before noon on December 5, 2023, hikers reported seeing a mountain lion near a woman lying on the ground on the Crosier Mountain Trail. Authorities confirmed that one of the hikers checked for a pulse and found none. The identity of the woman, whose death is currently under investigation, has not been released by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office.

In response to the incident, two mountain lions spotted near the scene were euthanized on December 7. A third mountain lion, which was also seen in the area, was not located during the subsequent search, according to Kara Van Hoose, spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. In an official statement, she noted that the search is now officially closed.

The tragic event has heightened concerns among local hikers, with reports of multiple mountain lion encounters on the same trail in November. Glen Haven resident Gary Messina shared his experience with the Associated Press, recounting a harrowing encounter where he fought off a mountain lion, believing it may have been the same one involved in last week’s incident due to its aggressive behavior.

This developing story underscores the need for caution in regions known for wildlife encounters. Hikers are urged to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings while enjoying the outdoors. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
