Toshiba Unveils 40TB HDD Plans for 2027 But Risks Lagging Behind
UPDATE: Toshiba has just announced plans to launch a 40TB hard disk drive (HDD) by 2027, utilizing an innovative 12-platter design with Microwave-Assisted Magnetic Recording (MAMR). However, this development raises concerns as competing companies like Seagate are already testing their own 40TB drives and planning for even larger 44TB models by the same year.
As data demands soar, Toshiba’s new HDD will feature an advanced stacking technology that promises to enhance storage density and durability. The 3.5-inch drives will replace aluminum substrates with glass, resulting in thinner platters and increased precision. Toshiba aims to provide data centers with larger capacities while ensuring a lower total cost of ownership (TCO).
Seagate’s CEO Dr. Dave Mosley highlighted significant advancements in their HAMR technology, which allows for 4TB per platter across a 10-disk configuration, setting a high benchmark in mechanical storage density. Limited shipments of Seagate’s 40TB HDDs began in May 2025, with mass production expected in the first half of 2026.
The urgency for Toshiba is palpable. Despite their ambitious plans, they risk falling behind as Seagate is already eyeing a future with 50TB drives by 2028. With the fast-paced evolution of storage technology, Toshiba’s announcement may feel like a response to a rapidly changing market where competitors are not just keeping pace but racing ahead.
In a recent statement, Toshiba’s engineers hinted at the possibility of integrating HAMR with their new 12-disk design, suggesting a potential hybrid approach for future products. The question remains whether Toshiba can keep up with Seagate’s aggressive roadmap.
As the market awaits these developments, data centers worldwide are poised for significant shifts in storage capabilities. The tech community is abuzz, and analysts are keenly watching how Toshiba will navigate this competitive landscape.
