Sweden’s Team Hasselborg Clinches Third Olympic Gold in Curling
BREAKING: Sweden’s “Team Hasselborg” secured a thrilling 6-5 victory over Switzerland in the women’s curling final at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium on Sunday. This win marks a historic achievement, making them the first women’s team to claim three Olympic medals overall.
The team, led by skip Anna Hasselborg, previously won gold in Pyeongchang 2018 and bronze in Beijing 2022. Despite their remarkable track record, they entered these Games as underdogs, grappling with significant life changes, including three pregnancies among team members in 2023. However, they rebounded with determination, clinching their third European Curling Championships title in November.
In a tightly contested match, Sweden started strong, scoring two points early on. Switzerland’s skip, Silvana Tirinzoni, attempted to regain momentum but found themselves at a 3-1 deficit at halftime. Switzerland’s Alina Paetz executed stellar shots, leveling the score at 3-3 in the sixth end. However, Hasselborg’s team showcased resilience, stealing a crucial point in the seventh end, ultimately sealing their victory.
“Starting with the hammer was huge; we knew they would throw a lot of offensive shots at us,” Hasselborg stated after the match. “Before the Europeans in November, I felt like we were peaking at the right time, and that was true.”
This victory also elevates Agnes Knochenhauer, a key player in the final, to an elite status, matching her compatriot Oskar Eriksson as the only curlers to earn four Olympic medals. Knochenhauer expressed her gratitude, stating, “I couldn’t do any of this without the team and the families.”
In a notable side event, Rachel Homan‘s Canada defeated the United States 10-7 to win the bronze medal on Saturday, intensifying the competition spirit in the curling arena.
As the Olympic Games progress, all eyes will be on Team Hasselborg as they continue to inspire with their unmatched dedication and skill. Fans and supporters can expect more thrilling matches in the days to come.
