SMU Triumphs Over Arizona 24-19 in Holiday Bowl Showdown
UPDATE: SMU has just defeated No. 21 Arizona 24-19 in a thrilling Holiday Bowl matchup held at Snapdragon Stadium on December 29, 2023. This victory not only snaps a five-game postseason losing streak for the Mustangs but also marks their first postseason win since 2012.
In a stunning performance, quarterback Kevin Jennings threw for 278 yards, completing 21 of 32 passes. His standout moment came early with an impressive 80-yard touchdown pass during a trick play just two plays into the game. Jennings played a crucial role in orchestrating touchdown runs from teammates T.J. Harden and Stone Eby, helping the Mustangs build a commanding lead.
SMU entered halftime with a dominant 24-0 lead, showcasing offensive prowess that left fans buzzing. Despite a rocky second half where Jennings threw three interceptions, SMU held on to secure the win. Arizona struggled to capitalize on the turnovers, ultimately finishing the season with a 9-4 record, falling short of their second ten-win season in three years.
“We came out strong and executed our game plan,” Jennings said post-game. “It feels incredible to bring home a win for our program after so many years.”
The Mustangs’ last postseason victory came in 2012 when they triumphed over Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl. This win not only offers redemption for SMU but also contrasts sharply with their infamous collapse in the 1980 Holiday Bowl, where they squandered a significant lead against BYU.
Arizona’s Noah Fifita, who completed 28 of 43 passes for 265 yards, threw three touchdown passes, including a last-minute score that brought the Wildcats within striking distance. However, SMU recovered the critical onside kick, sealing their victory.
This game is a pivotal moment for both teams as they look to build momentum for the upcoming season. The loyalty shown by both quarterbacks, Jennings and Fifita, who are set to finish their careers at their respective schools, reflects a deep commitment in an era dominated by transfers.
As fans celebrate this historic win, the Mustangs are poised for a promising future, with renewed energy and determination heading into the offseason. Stay tuned for more updates as the college football landscape continues to evolve.
