Skyline High Alumni Honor Coach John Beam with Special Screening
UPDATE: Skyline High alumni gathered in Oakland, California on Saturday to honor the legacy of Coach John Beam with a heartfelt screening of the acclaimed documentary series, Last Chance U. This emotional tribute comes just weeks after the tragic passing of Beam, who was shot and killed in November at Laney College.
The special showing drew a large crowd of alumni, including members of the Class of 2000, who organized the event as a fundraiser for a teacher appreciation grant. Organizer Charles Lassey reflected on the significance of the gathering, stating, “It took Coach Beam getting taken away from us to say, ‘Hey. We need to do something.'”
Attendees shared fond memories of Beam, who spent 45 years teaching and coaching in Oakland. He was known for his tough love approach, bringing out the best in students and athletes. Christina Macalino, a Class of 2000 graduate, spoke about Beam’s impact, saying, “He was supportive, inspiring. He believed in the Oakland community.”
Beam is remembered for coaching over 20 athletes who went on to play in the NFL. His career was tragically cut short when he was fatally shot in an incident described by Oakland police as a targeted attack by a former student.
At the event, Mark Stauffer, a Class of 1978 alumnus, referred to Beam as a father figure who transformed lives, stating, “He took guys out of the gutter and turned them into Pro-Bowlers.” Such sentiments echoed throughout the gathering, highlighting the profound effect Beam had on generations of students.
Even those who never played under Beam, like Eric Romero, Class of 2017, attended to show their support. He emphasized Beam’s holistic approach, saying, “He saw more than just student-athletes. He just wanted to make sure they were taken care of.”
The tribute not only served as a memorial for a beloved coach but also as a reminder of the community’s resilience and unity in the wake of tragedy. The outpouring of support from alumni and friends illustrates the lasting impact Coach Beam had on the lives he touched.
As the Skyline community continues to mourn, they are also rallying together, ensuring that Coach Beam’s legacy of dedication and mentorship lives on. Plans for future events and initiatives to honor his memory are already in the works, promising to keep his spirit alive in Oakland.
