Rockford Restaurateur Frank Manzullo Dies at 83 While on Vacation
URGENT UPDATE: Frank Manzullo, the beloved owner of Manzullo’s Famous Italian Restaurant in New Milford, has died at the age of 83 while on vacation, shocking the Rockford community. His passing on February 28, 2023 leaves a profound impact on those who knew him and the many lives he touched through his work.
Manzullo, who was also a longtime Rockford Township trustee, dedicated his life to serving the community and championing environmental efforts. He was known for his passionate efforts to combat littering, famously stating, “I call those who litter lazy!” His involvement with the Great American Cleanup through Keep Northern Illinois Beautiful showcased his commitment to improving the community’s appearance and spirit.
Born and raised in Rockford, Manzullo opened his restaurant in 1964 after returning from military service. The restaurant was a staple for over 41 years, known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Italian cuisine. He and his wife, Mary Ann, retired on December 31, 2004, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered fondly by countless patrons.
A U.S. Army veteran, Manzullo credited his parents for instilling in him a strong work ethic and a disdain for litter. His childhood experiences at the family’s Shady Mill Drive-In restaurant shaped his lifelong mission against littering. In a poignant guest column for the Rockford Register Star, he reflected on this journey, expressing how deeply it affected him.
Funeral services are scheduled for March 16, 2023, with a visitation at 10 a.m. followed by a mass at 11 a.m. at St. Rita Catholic Church, located at 6254 Valley Knoll. Burial will occur at the New Milford Cemetery. A separate visitation will take place on March 15 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel.
Manzullo is survived by his longtime companion, Judy Bufalo, his children, Mary Catherine Flynn and Frank A. Manzullo, III, and his brother, former Congressman Don Manzullo. His contributions to the community and his vibrant spirit will be deeply missed.
