URGENT UPDATE: The Richton Park Fresh Market is poised for a soft opening this week, filling a critical gap in the community where grocery options have dwindled. Local grocery owner Sal Omer plans to unveil the new store at 3736 Sauk Trail, a site that has remained vacant since the Save-A-Lot closure in 2024 left residents struggling for access to fresh food.

This development is crucial as municipal officials have been grappling to attract grocery stores to Richton Park, a designated food desert. Omer, whose family has a legacy in grocery, emphasized that customer satisfaction is key. “As long as customers are happy and you treat them well, they will come back,” he stated.

The market will occupy a substantial 15,000-square-foot space and aims to provide fresh, affordable meat and produce. Omer shared his commitment to quality, revealing that the store will feature an in-house butcher and a grill for cooking meat at no extra charge, pending final licensing.

“We want to fill a gap in access to fresh, affordable food,” Omer noted, highlighting the importance of fresh produce that he personally selects and delivers to keep costs low. His approach has proven successful at his other store, La Super Carniceria y Taqueria, in Chicago Heights.

Residents are eager, particularly about the butcher counter and the store’s full-service deli section. Brandon Boys, the director of economic development for Richton Park, remarked on the excitement surrounding the opening, which is strategically located within walking distance of several neighborhoods and near the Metra Electric station.

While the store’s soft opening is scheduled for later this week, Omer indicated that a complete rollout timeline is still uncertain. He plans to start with a limited selection of products and employees, maintaining a low profit margin to keep prices affordable. With over 100 job applications received, Omer has built a dedicated team but does not anticipate further hiring in the immediate future.

The village of Richton Park has taken steps to support this venture, approving a resolution to provide a Cook County Class 7D property tax incentive. This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on the grocery store for the next 12 years, a move designed to foster grocery development in the area.

This soft opening arrives at a crucial time when residents have been left without convenient access to fresh produce and meats. The closure of the Save-A-Lot store highlighted the challenges faced by the community, and Omer’s new market aims to address these pressing needs directly.

As Omer prepares to welcome customers, he assures that he will be present daily, welcoming feedback and product requests to ensure the store meets community needs. “Customers will see me every day,” he emphasized. “Whatever they want, I’ll try to do everything they like.”

The Richton Park Fresh Market is set to become a vital resource for residents, breathing new life into an area that has long struggled with food access. Stay tuned for updates as the soft opening approaches, and watch for what this new market will bring to the community.
