Putin Orders 2026 Invasion of Ukraine, Snubbing Trump Peace Plan
UPDATE: In a shocking move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to expand its invasion of Ukraine, with plans to seize additional territory in 2026. This escalation represents a significant setback for former U.S. President Donald Trump‘s ongoing peace efforts.
The directive was announced by General Valery Gerasimov during a visit to a frontline command post on Tuesday. He revealed that Russian forces are set to invade parts of the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, describing the land grab as an extension of a “buffer zone.” Officials claim this zone is intended to push Ukrainian troops away from Russia’s borders, but Kyiv believes it is merely a pretext for further incursions.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the so-called buffer zone is a strategic move to position Russian artillery closer to Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the Kremlin’s plans as “mad,” asserting his troops will defend these crucial regions with all available resources.
Gerasimov claimed that recent battlefield advances have emboldened Russian ambitions, stating, “The troops of the joint grouping are confidently advancing deeper into the enemy’s defenses.” He further claimed that more than 700 sq km of territory was captured in December alone. However, ISW analysts challenge these assertions, estimating that Russia has realistically seized around 4,700 sq km over the past year, significantly less than the claimed 6,000 sq km.
As winter conditions further strain Ukrainian forces, the fighting intensifies in contested areas, including Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. This latest offensive appears to be a response to Ukraine’s alleged drone attack on a Putin residence in Novgorod, which Kyiv denies.
In light of these developments, Trump and Zelenskyy met at Mar-a-Lago last week, discussing potential pathways to peace. Trump praised the bravery of the Ukrainian people and indicated that negotiations were progressing. He stated, “I think we’re doing very well. We could be very close,” referencing ongoing discussions about thorny issues that remain unresolved.
Despite Trump’s optimism, Russia has rejected the notion of a temporary ceasefire, insisting any resolution must favor Putin’s territorial ambitions. Russian officials have indicated a willingness to consider a deal if Ukraine relinquishes control of Donbas and Crimea, regions still contested.
Zelenskyy remains firm, vowing not to concede any territory to Russia. The stakes are high as this new invasion plan threatens to escalate tensions further, with implications that could reverberate throughout the international community.
As the world watches, attention turns to how Ukraine will respond to this renewed aggression and what role international actors, including the U.S., will play in the unfolding crisis. The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated, as both military and diplomatic efforts must adapt rapidly to these developments.
Stay tuned as we continue to monitor this critical story, bringing you the latest updates on the situation in Ukraine.
