Phil Campbell of Motörhead Dies at 64: Rock Community Mourns
URGENT UPDATE: Iconic guitarist Phil Campbell of the legendary metal band Motörhead has died at the age of 64, his family confirmed on social media just hours ago. The music world is reeling from the loss, and tributes are pouring in from fans and fellow musicians alike.
Campbell’s family did not disclose a cause of death, but they revealed he had been in intensive care following a “complex major operation.” In a heartfelt statement, they shared, “Phil was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, and a proud and loving grandfather, known affectionately as ‘Bampi.’ He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be missed immensely.”
This devastating news comes following Campbell’s remarkable career that began in the 1970s with the British heavy metal band Persian Risk. He joined Motörhead in 1984, recruited by the band’s iconic frontman Lemmy Kilmister after the departure of guitarist Brian Robertson. Over the next 31 years, Campbell became the longest-serving guitarist with the band, contributing to 16 studio albums featuring classic hits like “Deaf Forever,” “Eat the Rich,” and “Born to Raise Hell.”
Tributes have been flooding social media. Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee expressed his sorrow, stating, “He was the funniest guy I have ever known and the best rock guitar player I have ever played with. My family and I send our thoughts to Phil’s family. Sleep well, my friend and rock soldier.”
Musicians from across the rock spectrum have come forward to share their memories of Campbell. Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses tweeted, “Phil is one of the most kind and FUNNY humans out there and made the world a better place. Period. I will miss you my friend.”
Anthrax’s Frank Bello reminisced about the good times spent with Campbell, saying, “We’ve done many tours together and I always loved his playing and sense of humor. Rest in peace, my friend.”
Even rock legends like Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath shared his condolences, recalling fun moments from their tours together. Butler’s tribute highlighted Campbell’s wicked sense of humor, stating, “A truly nice man with a wicked sense of humour. RIP Phil, say hi to Lemmy [please don’t wear the skirt though]!”
Former Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider added, “My friend Phil Campbell is gone. Sending my thoughts and love to his family.”
