Pharrell Williams Sued by Chad Hugo Over $1 Million in Royalties
UPDATE: Pharrell Williams is facing a serious legal battle as former friend and collaborator Chad Hugo has filed a lawsuit claiming he is owed up to $1 million in unpaid royalties. This shocking development, revealed in a January 2026 report by Billboard, marks a dramatic turn in their decades-long friendship and partnership as iconic producers in the music industry.
The lawsuit alleges that Williams has engaged in “self-dealing” and has failed to provide essential financial documents, thus obstructing Hugo from understanding his rightful earnings from their joint ventures. According to Hugo’s attorney, this “systemic denial” of transparency is a breach of their operating agreement, depriving Hugo of vital information needed to assess profits from their work with both The Neptunes and N.E.R.D.
Hugo claims he has not received his fair share of royalties from their 2017 album, No One Ever Really Dies, and asserts he is owed a significant amount for album sales, touring income, and merchandising deals. His legal team argues that Williams’ actions warrant punitive damages due to the “willful, fraudulent, and malicious conduct” outlined in the lawsuit.
As tensions escalate, Hugo’s team has reportedly struggled to communicate with Williams’ representatives, with many attempts at dialogue being ignored or inadequately addressed. The lawsuit states, “Defendant Williams’ persistent failure to provide [financial records] constitutes a breach of the operating agreement.”
This ongoing feud is particularly poignant as Pharrell recently admitted he no longer speaks to Hugo, despite their once-close bond. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he expressed gratitude for their time together, saying, “I love him, and I always wish him the absolute best.”
The fallout from this lawsuit could have significant implications for both artists and their legacy in the music industry. Fans are left wondering how this legal confrontation will affect their future collaborations and the broader impact on their respective careers.
As this story develops, many are eager to see how both parties will respond and what the outcome of this lawsuit will be. Stay tuned for updates as more information becomes available.
