Oklahoma Couple Pleads Guilty for Attempted Baby Sale for Beer
UPDATE: An Oklahoma couple has just pleaded guilty in a shocking case involving their six-month-old baby, who they attempted to sell for a six-pack of beer. Darien Urban, 22, and Shalene Ehlers, 21, face serious legal repercussions after a judge accepted their pleas in a disturbing incident at the Beaver Lake Hide-A-Way Campground in Rogers, Oklahoma.
Authorities report that the bizarre transaction unfolded when Ehlers approached a couple at the campground, asking for beer—a request she allegedly made frequently. Witnesses say a man named Ricky Crawford offered them beer in exchange for keeping their baby overnight, raising immediate concerns about the child’s safety.
The couple later attempted to formalize the arrangement with another camper, Cody Nathaniel Martin, even drafting a contract that stated they would surrender their baby for $1,000. This chilling agreement was reportedly filmed, revealing the couple’s intent to abandon their child for cash.
Police were alerted to the situation when a concerned individual reported the couple’s intentions. According to the affidavit, Urban and Ehlers signed a document indicating they were transferring their parental rights to Martin for the agreed-upon amount. The contract specified: “I, Darien Urban and Shalene Ehlers, are signing our rights over to Cody Nathaniel Martin of our baby boy for $1,000 on 09/21/2024.”
Urban has been sentenced to three years in jail, with an additional three-year suspended sentence, while Ehlers will serve six years of state-supervised probation. If she complies with her probation terms, she could avoid a criminal record entirely.
The couple’s actions have left the community reeling. According to investigators, both parents created a “substantial risk of death or serious physical injury” to their child. The baby, who exhibited signs of neglect, has been placed in protective custody, and neither parent is allowed any contact with him.
As this troubling case unfolds, it raises critical questions about child welfare and parental responsibility. The couple’s next steps in the legal process remain to be seen, but the incident has sparked outrage and concern among local residents and beyond.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about similar cases to come forward, highlighting the importance of child protection. This developing story continues to resonate deeply, reminding the public of the vulnerabilities faced by children in dire situations.
Stay tuned for updates on this urgent matter as it develops.
