UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, North Texas triumphed over San Diego State, clinching a landmark 49-47 victory in the New Mexico Bowl on December 16, 2023. This marks North Texas’ first bowl win since 2013 and caps a historic season under former coach Eric Morris, who recently left to join Oklahoma State.

The game was a nail-biter, with Caleb Hawkins leading the charge, scoring three touchdowns and breaking the NCAA record for touchdowns by a freshman. Hawkins rushed for 198 yards, showcasing his explosive talent as he helped propel North Texas to a stunning 12-2 season record.

After a decade of bowl game heartbreak, the Mean Green finally broke their streak of seven consecutive bowl losses. The team had not tasted victory in a bowl game since they defeated UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl, ending one of the longest droughts in college football.

North Texas displayed a commanding performance from the outset, leading 28-20 at halftime. The game began with a perfectly executed fake punt that set the tone for their offensive explosion. Backup running back Ashton Gray took the fake for a 34-yard gain, leading to a touchdown that gave North Texas an early edge.

Despite facing a tough San Diego State defense that had previously allowed an average of just 12.6 points per game, North Texas dominated on offense. Quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who had been leading the nation in passing yards, threw for 250 yards and three touchdowns, stepping up when it mattered most.

As the game progressed, San Diego State fought back, slicing the deficit to just one score with a 63-yard punt return touchdown. However, North Texas held its ground, sealing the victory with a critical touchdown pass from Mestemaker to Cameron Dorner late in the fourth quarter.

With this monumental win, the Mean Green not only celebrated their first bowl victory in a decade but also set a program record for most wins in a season. The future of the team remains uncertain, as several key players, including Mestemaker, are evaluating their next steps following the season.

Interim coach Drew Svoboda, who took over after Morris’s departure, is expected to join Morris at Oklahoma State, further adding to the questions surrounding the team’s direction. North Texas has already secured former West Virginia and Troy coach Neal Brown to lead the program moving forward.

This victory not only signifies a turning point for North Texas football but also serves as a reminder of the impact that coaching and player development can have on a program’s success. As the Mean Green bask in their hard-earned glory, fans are left eager for what the future holds under new leadership.

Stay tuned for more updates as North Texas navigates this transition and builds on their historic season.
