Newport News Prioritizes Public Service Over Politics in New Initiatives
UPDATE: Newport News is launching transformative community programs aimed at enhancing public service and direct engagement with residents. Commissioner of the Revenue, Tiffany Boyle, emphasizes that these initiatives prioritize people over politics, ensuring that taxpayer interests are front and center.
In a bold move to improve local governance, Boyle announced several key initiatives designed to create direct pathways for taxpayer interaction and support. These programs, including BOSSES (Businesses Operating for Successful Stronger Economies) and Commissioners & Cans, are set to redefine how local government serves its citizens.
The BOSSES program offers free workshops for entrepreneurs, focusing on essential topics like licensing and compliance. This initiative, which collaborates with Newport News Economic Development and the Small Business Development Center, aims to equip local businesses with vital tools to thrive in a competitive economy.
Moreover, the Commissioners & Cans food drive, now in its seventh year, has expanded statewide, rallying support for food banks across Virginia. This initiative showcases how local government can effectively partner with communities to combat hunger and foster generosity.
Youth engagement is also a priority, as seen in the Commissioner’s CASH initiative, which empowers students with goal-setting skills through interactive worksheets. This program is being integrated into local schools and summer camps, helping to shape the future of Newport News’s youth.
Additionally, the LEED program (Labor, Education, Entrepreneurship, Diversity) allows Boyle to connect directly with local businesses, gathering insights on tax policies and their impacts. This hands-on approach ensures that the voices of taxpayers are heard where they work and live.
For seniors, the office has launched TIPS (Tax Information Preparing Seniors) sessions, guiding older residents through available tax relief options. This effort ensures that seniors are informed and supported regarding their tax responsibilities.
Accessibility remains a cornerstone of these initiatives. Boyle proudly announced that the revenue office now features a fully accessible front entrance ramp, reinforcing the commitment to dignity and respect for all residents.
“This is about action, not politics,” Boyle stated. “Our responsibility is to meet the needs of our community and ensure that every resident feels valued and supported.”
These developments come at a crucial time, as Newport News continues to recover and grow post-pandemic. By prioritizing engagement and transparency, Boyle aims to strengthen community ties and enhance the overall quality of life in the city.
As a founding member of Virginia’s Minority Business Commission, Boyle recognizes that improving local governance has a ripple effect throughout the Hampton Roads region. “When we enhance clarity and access, we create opportunities for everyone,” she added.
Residents and organizations interested in these initiatives are encouraged to reach out directly to Boyle at [email protected] for more information or to schedule community engagements.
With these programs, Newport News is setting a new standard for public service, demonstrating that effective governance is rooted in community connection and accountability. Taxpayers are not just numbers; they are stakeholders in a thriving, vibrant city.
