New Year Milestones: Delaware County’s Historic Highlights
UPDATE: Delaware County marks a significant day in history as it reflects on key milestones from the past century. Today, January 1, reveals transformative developments that shaped the area, making it more relevant than ever.
100 Years Ago (1926): The State Highway Department made headlines with the imminent construction of a modern highway stretching from Media to Clifton, following the heavily trafficked Route 130. Officials are set to advertise for bids on 22,670 linear feet of reinforced concrete pavement, 20 feet wide, covering crucial areas in Upper Darby, Springfield, Nether Providence, and parts of Swarthmore, Clifton Heights, and Media. This upgrade is expected to enhance traffic flow significantly on one of Pennsylvania’s most utilized routes.
75 Years Ago (1951): Delaware County stood at the forefront of America’s military readiness during a tense global landscape. With the nation rearming, the local industry was primed for a surge in productivity. A recent survey by the Chester Times revealed that the county—historically known as the arsenal of America—was gearing up to increase its output as global conflicts loomed once more.
50 Years Ago (1976): The spirit of celebration resonated in Swarthmore as Liberty bells rang out at midnight, welcoming America’s 200th birthday year. Councilman G. West Cochrane and his wife hosted a New Year’s Eve party, cherished by friends who have gathered for 15 consecutive years. The event symbolized hope and unity as the nation embarked on a new chapter.
25 Years Ago (2001): Financial adjustments were made in Ridley Park as the Borough Council approved a budget of $2,912,118, marking a 3.4 percent increase from the previous year. While the millage rate will rise from 3.982 mills to 4.116 mills, the borough anticipates bolstered revenue through real estate transfer taxes and increased building permits, despite a drop in total assessed valuation by $4.5 million.
10 Years Ago (2016): A new year brought joy to Alfred Kirkland, whose daughter, Mikayla Yvette, was born at 12:40 a.m. at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Drexel Hill. Weighing 5 pounds and measuring 18 inches, Mikayla became the first baby born in Delaware County in the new year, marking a personal milestone for the Kirkland family and a moment of hope for the community.
These snapshots of history not only highlight Delaware County’s evolution but also reflect the resilience and spirit of its residents over the decades. As the community celebrates these milestones, eyes are now turned toward the future and what the next chapters will bring.
