BREAKING: North Dakota State University (NDSU) has just announced a critical development in its leadership transition: the university will hire an external firm to search for a new president following the departure of David Cook. The NDSU Presidential Search Committee voted unanimously on December 5 to engage Academic Search, a Washington, D.C.-based firm, aiming to name a successor by mid-March.

This decision comes as Cook prepares to take over as president of Iowa State University on March 1, 2024, after leading NDSU since May 2022. His annual salary at NDSU stands at $532,701, while his new role will pay him $700,000. Cook’s last day at NDSU is expected to be sometime in February.

The urgency of this search is underscored by the need for a seamless transition. NDSU Board President Kevin Black, who co-chairs the search committee with NDSU Chief of Staff Jace Beehler, stated, “This is a serious process,” emphasizing the importance of finding a candidate who can lead the university effectively into the future.

The committee plans to begin advertising the presidential position on December 15 or 16, with a deadline for applications set for January 30, 2024. They aim to shortlist about ten semifinalists for interviews in mid-February, with finalists expected by the end of that month. Campus visits and interviews for the top candidates are tentatively scheduled for the first week of March, with recommendations for the new president possibly made by mid-March.

Black noted that the decision to hire a search firm reflects a commitment to keeping NDSU competitive in the higher education landscape. The firm will assist in navigating a thorough and effective search process, which is crucial as other universities across the country are also seeking new leadership.

While the exact cost of hiring Academic Search remains unknown, Black highlighted that the investment is essential for the future of NDSU. The committee is poised to make significant decisions that will shape the university’s direction, and they are eager to have the new president in place by early summer to facilitate a smooth transition into the fall semester.

As NDSU embarks on this important search, all eyes will be on the committee’s actions in the coming weeks. The community is urged to stay tuned for updates on this pivotal leadership change that will impact the university’s future and its students.

With the clock ticking, NDSU is taking decisive steps to ensure it finds the right leader to guide the institution forward.
