Medium Supports Nationwide Strike Against ICE on Friday
URGENT UPDATE: Medium’s CEO, Tony Stubblebine, has just announced that employees can take Friday, January 30, 2023, off to join a nationwide strike protesting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This decision comes amid rising tensions following the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by immigration officers, sparking outrage and protests across the country.
Stubblebine communicated his support through the company’s Slack channel, stating, “our business thrives when the country thrives.” He emphasized the importance of employee participation in this critical moment, encouraging them to stand up against the situation in Minneapolis that has led to widespread demonstrations.
Activists, unions, and celebrities are rallying for a massive economic blackout, urging Americans to refrain from work, school, and shopping. High-profile figures like Pedro Pascal, Ariana Grande, and Jamie Lee Curtis are amplifying the call on social media, driving significant public engagement around this issue.
Stubblebine affirmed that participation in the strike is voluntary, allowing employees the freedom to take as much time off as needed. He also revealed that Medium will publish content related to the strike, including a “Survival Guide To Police Encounters During Protests” in its Friday newsletter.
The growing movement reflects a larger push against ICE, with more than 60 executives from Minnesota-based corporations, including Target and Cargill, recently signing an open letter advocating for peace and de-escalation in the community.
As protests intensify, the situation remains fluid. Activists are calling for the removal of ICE officers from cities nationwide, making the stakes of this strike higher than ever. The economic implications of a nationwide strike could reverberate across various sectors, highlighting the urgent need for reform and justice.
Stay tuned for updates on the strike and its impact as we approach January 30. This is a defining moment for many communities, and the eyes of the nation are watching.
