UPDATE: Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is set to undergo a transformative $450 million overhaul, with major enhancements to the travel experience launching on January 9, 2026. This significant upgrade promises to replace the airport’s “antiquated” baggage system, streamlining passenger movement and improving overall efficiency.

The ambitious project features a new Terminal A/B connector that will link Concourses A and B, significantly changing how travelers navigate the airport. According to Shannetta Griffin, executive director and CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration, “We’re going to open up five new gates down in what we call the A/B connector. So, what that’s going to do is allow our passengers to traverse between concourse A and concourse B, and be able to have a new travel experience.”

The overhaul includes five relocated gates, modern restrooms, and a spacious, open area designed to enhance the travel atmosphere. New concessions, such as a bar and a Dunkin’ booth, will also be introduced, aligning with the airport’s food court zone.

A key highlight of this upgrade is the advancement in the baggage handling system. The current setup processes approximately 2,100 bags per hour, while the new system will handle 3,400 bags per hour and has the capacity for future expansion to 5,200 bags per hour. Griffin emphasized, “What it’s really going to do is give a new feel and look, in regards to the airport itself, a very high-tech and new baggage system.”

The new system boasts 670 motors powering around a mile and a half of conveyor belts, efficiently transporting bags beneath the passenger walkways. This expansion will add a two-story, 142,000-square-foot connector, along with 78,000 square feet of renovations to existing spaces — marking it as the largest capital improvement project in the airport’s history.

“This is one of the largest capital improvement projects the airport has seen. It’s going to be one of our most fabulous as we open that up for our largest air carrier, which is Southwest Airlines,” Griffin stated. Southwest Airlines is expected to be a major beneficiary, with flights scheduled to utilize the relocated gates.

While the planning for this project began in 2017, construction faced interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, work resumed in 2022, showcasing the dedication of the workers involved. Griffin noted, “Getting back on track after the interruption of construction during the pandemic is a testament to the men and women who worked many long hours.”

Funding for the upgrade comes from airport revenue bonds, federal funding, and the Maryland Transportation Trust Fund. This project not only enhances efficiency but also prioritizes passenger safety and comfort. Improved circulation spaces and updated restrooms will contribute to a more pleasant airport experience.

“When people come into the airport, this is the first place they come, and this is the last place they see when they come back from their travels,” Griffin added. Ensuring a safe and comfortable environment is paramount as BWI prepares to welcome travelers to its newly revamped facilities.

As the opening date approaches, expect increased discussions around the impact of these changes on travel efficiency and passenger experience at BWI. Stay tuned for further updates as this significant project unfolds, bringing a modernized travel experience to Maryland’s busy airport.
