Macy’s Ends 80-Year Santa Tradition at Union Square Store
BREAKING: Macy’s has officially ended its 80-year-old tradition of hosting Santa Claus at the Union Square store in San Francisco. This change comes just ahead of the holiday season, as the beloved Santa will embark on a national tour instead of making his traditional appearance following the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Macy’s officials confirmed the decision in a statement reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, stating, “This year, Macy’s Santa will not be available at our Union Square location. Instead, he will be going on a national tour to visit stores and communities he hasn’t had a chance to appear in before.”
This news has left many local shoppers feeling disappointed. Longtime patrons of the Union Square location expressed their sadness over the sudden change. Yvonne Fletcher, a local grandmother, lamented, “It seems weird without Santa Claus. I can’t bring my grandkids, and that’s what we were waiting for.”
Another resident, Briseyda, shared her heartache with ABC 7 News, stating, “It’s a tradition. That’s what we look forward to. It’s heartbreaking. I have kids of my own. The one thing they look forward to is Santa. The fact they’re not going to have that, it’s not tradition at all. Christmas is all about traditions and memories. Santa brings everyone together.”
The iconic figure has graced the Union Square store since the late 1940s, with the exception of the pandemic year. Families cherished the opportunity to line up for photos and share their Christmas wish lists with Santa. The role was notably filled by the beloved “Santa John” from 1990 to 2010, creating lasting memories for countless families.
As the holiday season approaches, many are left wondering how this decision will impact local festivities and community traditions. Shoppers in San Francisco are encouraged to share their thoughts on this significant change, as the national tour aims to bring Santa to new and diverse communities.
With Christmas just around the corner, the absence of Santa at Union Square marks a pivotal shift for Macy’s and the families who have made this tradition a part of their holiday celebrations. As the retailer navigates these changes, all eyes will be on how the national tour unfolds and whether it can replicate the cherished experiences of the past.
Stay tuned for more updates on Santa’s tour and the holiday events at Macy’s across the country.
