Lehigh County Agriculture Day Engages Students with Hands-On Learning

UPDATE: The fourth annual Lehigh County Agriculture Education Day took place today, October 21, 2025, captivating fourth graders from Hays Elementary School at the Agri-Plex on the Allentown Fairgrounds. This event, organized in collaboration with the Allentown Fair, Lehigh County Agricultural Society, and Penn State Agricultural Extension, aims to teach students about local agriculture and its significance in their community.

Students were engaged in hands-on activities, including shaking milk to make butter and preparing fresh applesauce, providing them with a tangible connection to agriculture. Karlee, one of the participants, described the experience as “exciting and delicious,” as she tasted the freshly made applesauce.

Notable local farmers, such as Roger Bowman of Winterside Farm, shared their expertise with the students. Bowman introduced them to sheep, while Kelly Weisner, a 4-H educator, guided students in interacting with chicks. Carlos, another student, worked alongside Richard Koenig to create applesauce, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the event.

The Lehigh County Farm Bureau also played a vital role in the educational initiative, emphasizing the importance of understanding where food comes from. “It’s essential for children to learn about the agricultural sector and its impact on their lives,” said a representative from the Farm Bureau.
