In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Kimball High School secured its ninth state championship title by defeating Fort Bend Crawford in the Class 4A Division I boys basketball state championship game on March 13, 2026. This victory, held in San Antonio, marks Kimball’s third state title since 2023 and brings them one step closer to the UIL state record.

Under the guidance of veteran coach Nicke Smith, Kimball showcased their dominance on the court. The team, which has now made its 16th appearance at the state level, overcame a slow start where they found themselves trailing 3-0 at the opening of the first quarter. The tide turned rapidly as they launched a 10-0 run, establishing a commanding lead of 32-18 by halftime.

Impressive Play and Strategy

In the second half, Fort Bend Crawford attempted to regain momentum with a brief 4-0 run. However, Kimball’s Rylan Austin halted their progress with a layup, helping to maintain a significant lead. Kimball entered the fourth quarter with a comfortable 17-point advantage, eventually finishing the game by outscoring Crawford 17-14.

Coach Smith has now achieved his third state championship as head coach of Kimball, leading the program back to the Alamodome after a season of challenges, including the loss of key players to Division I colleges. Despite finishing the regular season as the third-ranked team in Texas’s 4A category and placing second in District 11-4A behind Carter High School, Kimball’s playoff performance was nothing short of extraordinary. The team defeated their previous five postseason opponents by an average margin of 26.6 points.

Looking Ahead

The success of Kimball this season has not only solidified their place in Texas high school basketball history but has also set the stage for potential further achievements. With Carter also vying for a title in the 4A Division II game, the opportunity for a complete Dallas Independent School District (DISD) sweep remains alive. The enthusiasm surrounding the program continues to grow as they look toward future seasons.

As Kimball celebrates this latest triumph, the legacy of their basketball program endures, demonstrating resilience and excellence on the court. This victory not only adds to their storied history but also inspires the next generation of athletes in Texas.
