Joseph ‘Joe’ Omundson Passes Away at 86, Leaving Legacy

UPDATE: Joseph ‘Joe’ Omundson, a beloved figure in Duluth, Minnesota, has passed away at the age of 86. He died on February 18, 2026, at the Interfaith Care Center, leaving behind a rich legacy of community service and dedication to family.

Born on August 8, 1939, in Minneapolis, Joe moved to Duluth at just eight years old. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1957 and went on to serve in the Army National Guard from 1962 to 1968. Joe dedicated over 37 years of his career as a sales representative at Georgia Pacific (Superwood), retiring in 1997.

Joe’s life was marked by love and commitment. He married Barb Hutchinson in 1976 at the 1st Covenant Church. They shared a deep bond, celebrated by their family, which includes daughter Jody Rademaker, son Joel Omundson, and five great-grandchildren. He was also a proud grandfather to twin granddaughters Veronica Rademaker and Julia Strong.

Beyond his family, Joe was committed to his community. He was an active member of the Masons and the North Shore Striders. His passion for sports saw him officiate high school hockey and umpire fast-pitch softball games. Joe’s adventurous spirit led him to run races from 5 miles to marathons and embark on thrilling motorcycle trips to Sturgis, South Dakota.

A visitation will be held at the Cremation Society located at 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth, MN, on Wednesday, March 18, from 2 PM to 4 PM, followed by a Masonic service at 4 PM. The Duluth Honor Guard will also be present to honor Joe’s service to the community. Inurnment will take place at Oneota Cemetery.

Joe’s family expresses heartfelt gratitude to friends and loved ones for their support during this time. Special thanks go to the staff at Interfaith Care Center and St. Croix Hospice for their compassionate care.

His legacy continues through the lives he touched and the community he served. Joe Omundson will be remembered not just for his achievements but for his warm spirit and unwavering dedication to those around him.
