Jazz Show Canceled at Kennedy Center After Controversial Name Change
URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated Christmas Eve jazz show at the Kennedy Center has been abruptly canceled following a controversial name change linked to President Donald J. Trump. Drummer Chuck Redd, who has performed at this event for nearly 20 years, made the decision after discovering the name alteration on the center’s website.
In a statement, Redd expressed his discontent: “When I saw the name change on the Kennedy Center website and then hours later on the building, I chose to cancel our concert.” This announcement comes after Trump’s appointed board voted on December 19, 2025, to rename the venue to include Trump’s name, officially titled the Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center For The Performing Arts.
The building’s facade has already been modified to reflect the new name, although questions about the legality of this process loom large. The Kennedy Center’s official website simply states that the concert has been canceled, leaving many fans and attendees in the dark regarding the reasons behind the decision. The Trump administration has not commented on the cancellation as of now.
Since its inception, the Kennedy Center has served as a cultural cornerstone in the nation’s capital. Established by bipartisan legislation signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, the venue was named in memory of President John F. Kennedy just months after his assassination in 1963. Artists from various fields, including opera star Renee Fleming and actor Issa Rae, have distanced themselves from the Kennedy Center during Trump’s presidency, further complicating its cultural standing.
For those hoping to still experience live jazz this holiday season, the Kennedy Center will feature The Jazz Cookers for two performances on New Year’s Eve. Tickets are available now, and jazz fans are encouraged to reserve their spots quickly.
As this story develops, the implications of the name change and its impact on the arts community continue to unfold. Stay tuned for updates on this evolving situation.
