Honolulu Faces Heavy Rain, Mariners and Aviators Urged to Prepare

UPDATE: Honolulu is bracing for a significant rainy spell over the next few days as the National Weather Service (NWS) warns residents and travelers to prepare for adverse weather conditions. Starting Saturday and continuing into early next week, typical trade wind showers will impact windward and mauka areas, driven by a dissipating front west of Kauai.

The NWS forecasts a gradual strengthening of southeasterly winds today, pushing moisture toward the eastern and southeastern slopes of the islands. While trade winds are expected to shift slightly out of the east on Saturday, officials caution that pockets of enhanced rainfall may occur, though no significant moisture sources have been detected in the latest predictions.

Aviation alerts have been issued for potential moderate turbulence and low-level wind shear, particularly affecting the PHOG area by this afternoon, despite a generally expected VFR (Visual Flight Rules) condition. Aviators should take extra caution as conditions develop.

For mariners, a Small Craft Advisory is in effect until early Saturday for the waters of Maui County and the Big Island. A moderate to large northwest swell is expected to create combined sea conditions exceeding 10 feet, raising concerns for small craft and recreational boaters. Officials are warning that surf conditions along northern and western shores may warrant a High Surf Advisory as the incoming swell peaks.

Adding to the complexity, elevated water levels and peak monthly tides could lead to minor coastal flooding during early morning high tides. As trade winds strengthen, the east shore surf is anticipated to become choppier, further complicating conditions for beachgoers and maritime activities.

Despite these warnings, the NWS reports that critical fire weather conditions are unlikely this week in Honolulu. With relative humidity near seasonal norms and winds only increasing to moderate strength, the risk of fire remains below critical thresholds.
