UPDATE: The holiday travel rush is underway in Chicago, with airports and roads packed as travelers flock to reunite with loved ones. O’Hare International Airport alone is bracing for a staggering 263,000 travelers today, as record numbers hit the skies.

According to the AAA, the peak travel window is between 1 PM and 7 PM today, making it the worst time to be on the roads. Authorities predict that 5.7 million people in Illinois will be traveling on tollways between now and January 1.

Traveler Jeff Brown shared his excitement, stating, “We are going to France for Christmas and will be there through New Year. No presents, we are buying memories.” Another traveler, Talal Awartani, is headed to Cairo for a family wedding on Christmas Day, underscoring the emotional significance of these journeys.

The Chicago Department of Aviation reports a 6% increase in air travel compared to last year, highlighting an ongoing trend of rising numbers during the holiday season.

Despite the massive crowds, O’Hare is managing to keep delays to a minimum, averaging only 15 minutes today, with few cancellations reported. This news brought relief to Ami Modi, who is traveling with her 15-month-old for the longest trip he’s ever taken.

While today marks the busiest air travel day at O’Hare, Midway Airport, often referred to as the “busiest square mile in aviation,” is anticipated to see its peak crowds on December 27.

AAA spokesperson Molly Hart emphasized the record-breaking nature of this travel period: “Yet again, we’ve done it. Whether it was Thanksgiving, for Christmas, and year-end, we are breaking records. People are getting on the planes, getting on the road, and taking other modes of transportation.”

As the holiday travel season progresses, travelers are advised to allow ample time for their journeys and to remain patient amid the bustling crowds. With the combination of emotional reunions and logistical challenges, the coming weeks will be critical for holiday travelers. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
